The Secret to Long Lasting Wooden Wick Candles
Wooden wicks burn differently than traditional cotton wicks. When properly cared for, they offer a steady flame and a clean, even burn. When neglected, they may be harder to light or may extinguish too quickly. The secret to great performance: consistent trimming and removing excess char.
Before You Light: Essential Prep
- How to Achieve a Perfect First Burn - The first burn determines how your candle performs over time. Allow the wax to melt completely from edge to edge before extinguishing. This may take several hours, depending on the size of the candle, but it prevents tunneling and ensures your candle burns evenly all the way to the bottom.
- Trim the Wick - Before each burn, trim your wooden wick to about 1/8–1/4 inch. This encourages a stable flame and helps the candle burn efficiently.
- Clear Away Charred Wood - After the candle has fully cooled, gently break off any loose, blackened wood from the previous burn. Keep debris out of the wax. Removing char reduces soot, improves fragrance release, and supports an even melt pool.
